What A Belter!

Last night I was treated to one of the best tennis matches I have ever seen.
Andy Murray Vs Richard Gasquet, it went the full five sets and was non-stop action and emotion for players and spectators alike.

The first set was really neck and neck and it went to Gasquet. The second set Murray was outplayed; repeatedly attempting failing drop shots and audible self talk. 2-0 Gasquet.

The third set looked like going to Gasquet but he failed to serve out the match and this was the beginning of the Murray revival and the fall of Gasquet.

Both of these player have excellent skills, are emotionally involved in their game and train long and hard to be where they are in the rankings. So what happened to Gasquet? What happened to Murray?

In the second set Murray was beating himself up, hitting his head with the racket and engaged in lots of self talk; this evidently did nothing but put him off his game. Conversely Gasquet kept playing his game and winning.

When Murray grittily picked off the third set, his emotional involvement rocketed, his self talk changed to roars of self encouragement, raising him and raising the crowd. Gasquet on the other hand seemed to go inside himself. Making unforced error after unforced error, his game literally fell apart. Murray went on to epically win the next two sets to take the game.

How do players continue to motivate themselves in positive ways? And why will this match be remembered?

How can you motivate yourself positively and how can you keep you motivation focused and on track?

Excellence in NLP and Clinical Hypnotherapy

Twenty people have chosen to attend the Excellence In Therapy workshop in Newcastle this coming weekend. This unique workshop is sponsored by IntegrityNLP.

If you already have some NLP knowledge and experience you might have tumbled that a great deal of NLP is about changing states.  You can package it and repackage it, call it new names ( 4G super nlp, XXX-code, i-nlp ) you get the picture right!

Sometimes I like to read books for the hell of it. One such book was Charles Bronsons Autobiography.  A very interesting read to say the least.  Bronson is one of the UK most securely held prisoners.

One part of the book tells us how Bronson ‘calms’ himself down.  He does this by putting his head in very cold water and keeping it there for as long as he can.

Now if anyone has every tried this and I have, the state shift is really quite dramatic. I can also vouch for the mammalian diving reflex!  All precautions for you own safety should you try this as I have been told you can drown in a teaspoon of water!

Anyroad, so how could this be used?

one class of examples is pattern interruption.

Calibration is all about noticing and detecting things you see, hear, smell, taste and feel. It is about detecting patterning but more specifically it is about detecting the relationships between the things you see, smell, taste, feel and hear.

One of the first calibration exercises we do on our NLP introduction course is this.

This involves two ( or more ) people. One person (A) is going to associate into two very different states. The other people ( B ) are only going to listen to A’s counting, they will not be looking at them. So the purpose is to tune your ears up and in.

State one
Think of someone you really like and do really respect.
Count from 1-10, then break state.

State two
Think of someone your not so keen on don’t really respect.
Count from 1-10, then break state.

Now select either state one or state two, associate into it and,
Count from 1-10, then break state.

Person B, having listened to A’s counting in the last state can now note which state it was.

Finally invite, person A, to associate into the first state, so they are in a good way after the exercise.
